MAUHK treats clothing as a canvas. Artwork, placement, fabric and proportion are considered as one composition, creating pieces designed to be worn and noticed.
WHAT WE MEAN BY WEARABLE ART
Wearable art begins where clothing becomes more than a surface for a graphic.
At MAUHK, the garment and artwork are considered as one piece. The scale of an image, its position on the body, the space surrounding it, the weight of the fabric and the silhouette all influence the final composition.
The result is clothing with its own visual identity. Made to function as clothing, but approached with the attention normally given to an artwork or object.
WHY CLOTHING
Art is traditionally placed on a wall, displayed on a pedestal or kept within a space. Clothing changes that relationship.
A garment moves. It changes with the person wearing it and becomes part of everyday surroundings: the street, a café, a train, a gallery.
Instead of asking someone to come to the artwork, wearable art takes the artwork with them.
That movement is what makes clothing such an interesting canvas for MAUHK.
HOW A PIECE IS BUILT
Every MAUHK piece is considered as a complete composition. These elements determine how the final piece feels and reads.
ARTWORK
The starting point of a piece. An image, object, place or visual idea becomes the basis for a composition that eventually finds its way onto clothing.
PLACEMENT
Artwork is not automatically centred or enlarged to fill available space. Position, scale and negative space determine how an image interacts with the garment and the person wearing it.
FABRIC
The garment is part of the work. Weight, texture, colour and structure influence how an artwork appears and how the finished piece feels.
SILHOUETTE
A composition changes when it is worn. Fit, proportions and movement determine the relationship between artwork, garment and body.
FINISH
Print, embroidery, labels and other finishing details translate the original idea into a physical piece. The technique is selected to support the design rather than compete with it.
WHY SMALL RUNS
MAUHK works in small production runs. Not to manufacture scarcity, but because the Gallery is built piece by piece.
Instead of continuously filling a catalogue, new works are introduced when they add something to the collection. Some remain, some disappear and others eventually become part of the Archive.
This allows the MAUHK Gallery to evolve over time without becoming a continuous stream of mass-produced clothing.

WHY A GALLERY
MAUHK is presented as a Gallery because we prefer to curate rather than simply catalogue.
The Exhibition contains the pieces currently available. The Gallery shows the wider visual world around MAUHK. Works that leave the current collection can become part of the Archive, while Selected Pieces introduce art and objects that share the same point of view.
Together, they turn MAUHK into something broader than a conventional clothing catalogue: an evolving collection of things we believe are worth wearing, seeing or keeping.
BEYOND CLOTHING
Wearable art does not exist in isolation. It belongs to a wider visual world.
Selected Pieces brings that world into the MAUHK Gallery through art, sculpture and objects chosen for their character, form and story.
Some are signed or numbered works. Others are simply objects we believe deserve attention. Each is selected individually and presented alongside the clothing rather than as a separate collection.

SMALL-RUN PRODUCTION.
MAUHK pieces are produced in smaller quantities rather than continuously reproduced at scale.
