An Exercise in Colour
Colour is rarely just colour.
A shade can belong to a place, a memory, an object or a particular moment in time. Removed from that context, it becomes something else entirely. A reference. A study. An object of its own.
COLOR STUDY 506 began with that idea.
OBJECT NOTES
Rather than treating colour as decoration, we approached it as the subject itself. The composition takes inspiration from traditional colour studies and material archives, where individual shades are isolated, numbered and documented. Something usually hidden inside the creative process becomes the artwork.
At the centre sits 506.
Muted, warm and slightly imperfect, the colour is presented against the texture of folded paper. Creases, shadows and irregularities deliberately remain visible. They give the otherwise precise composition a physical quality, somewhere between an archived studio reference and a found piece of paper pinned to an atelier wall.
That contrast became important to the piece: precision versus imperfection.
The artwork was translated onto a white heavyweight longsleeve, leaving space around the composition rather than allowing it to dominate the garment. From a distance, it reads quietly. Up close, the details begin to reveal themselves.
It is an approach that sits at the centre of MAUHK.
We do not see clothing simply as a surface for graphics. Each piece can become a frame, carrying an idea that could just as easily exist on paper or on the wall of a gallery.
Not just a colour.
A colour, observed.
